TOPET NUTRITION CALCI-VIT®

CALCI-VIT® is a high-quality nutritional supplement developed by a partnership of veterinarians, nutritionists, scientists and leading breeders. This dietary supplement contains 10% calcium in a form that is optimal for absorption in the gastrointestinal tract of birds. The addition of vitamin D3 to this product makes it easier for the body to absorb calcium and use it properly.

CALCI-VIT® promotes the formation of a good egg shell, supports skeletal construction and nervous system function of, among others:

Pigeons
Ornamental birds

Since most seed mixtures are low in calcium, this dietary supplement can be provided at times when calcium needs are high.

This is during breeding (eggshells are largely composed of calcium). If there is not enough calcium in the food, the body will get the amount it needs from the bones (the natural reservoir). This is a natural process. But if the amount taken from bones is too high, it can cause brittle bones, which then break more easily. Also, some birds continue laying eggs outside the breeding season. This creates a continuous high need for calcium. To properly absorb calcium from the feed, vitamin D is also needed. Vitamin D is partly absorbed from food, but is also created autonomously with the help of UV/sunlight. If a bird is kept indoors, it will lack this resource and this can induce deficiencies.

The Gray Red-tailed Parrot is another story. These birds do not seem to be able to extract calcium from the bones properly when they need it. The calcium level in the blood can then become too low. Since calcium is very important in muscle contraction, too low calcium in the blood can cause paralysis symptoms. With Grey Red Tails, it is often necessary to continue to give extra calcium in the feed for life.

Ingredients

Propylene glycol, calcium chloride, potassium chloride, and magnesium chloride.

Calcium
Calcium is a substance that helps the muscles contract. In the absence of calcium, muscle strength may decrease. Muscle weakness then develops and the bird may fall off its perch, for example. Birds that are fed food with too little calcium for a long time can develop a calcium deficiency. This occurs, for example, in birds that are given only a seed mix without supplements. Even if the bird does get enough calcium but uses a high amount, deficiencies can occur. This occurs, among other things, in birds that lay eggs continuously. In this way, they lose a lot of calcium. In the Grey Red Tail, calcium deficiency and consequently falling off their perch, occurs relatively often. This species of bird is worse at extracting calcium from the bones at the time it is needed. This causes acute calcium deficiency at that time.

In the blood, the level of calcium can be determined and checked if it is too low.

Treatment consists of supplementing the calcium deficiency. In the beginning, this will often have to be done with daily injections because the deficit will be made up too slowly through the feed. Once the calcium in the body is back in order, it is important to avoid future deficiencies. This can be done by ensuring adequate calcium in the diet (by feeding pellets, or by supplementing seed mixtures with supplements). In Grey Red Tails, it is often necessary to continue giving extra calcium.
